Buccellati

Born in 1891, Mario Buccellati opened his first jewelry boutique on Largo Santa Margherita in Milan in 1919. He would go on to establish stores in Rome and Florence along with opening stores overseas. One was on Fifth Avenue in New York in 1954 and another in Palm Beach, Florida in 1958. In 1949, Buccellati was commissioned by Pope Pius XII to create an icon for Princess Margaret to mark the first visit of a British Royal to Vatican City in hundreds of years. This work is currently on display at the Chianciano Art Museum in Tuscany.

In 1979, Gianmaria Buccellati opened his flagship store in Paris and solidified his status among the most prestigious jewelers of the world. In 1996, the exhibition The Art of Buccellati was held at the San Francisco Academy of Sciences and traveled to the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. In 2000, the museum exhibition Buccellati: Art in Gold, Silver, and Gems opened at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. This featured a retrospective of the work of both Mario and Gianmaria Buccellati. A year later, Gianmaria would launch his first watch collection in Geneva.

In 2013, Gianmaria’s three sons remained active members in the development of the company with Andrea as President, Gino meaning silverware production, and Maria Cristina managing the brand. In 2014, Andrea’s daughter Lucrezia Buccellati became the first female designer of the House. A year later, Andrea and Lucrezia would present the Timeless Blue project at the New York store.
